The Ferrari FF is the first four doors 4WD. The acronym “FF” stands in fact for “Ferrari Four”. It is a four seats fastback with a front-center 12 cylinders engine. With its newly developed four-wheel-drive system, recently patented by Ferrari, the Maranello firm cuts off with its past 2+2 models, such as the latest 612 Scaglietti. The FF is the fastest Grand Turismo in the world and represents a reference point for all other high performance Grand Turismo producers.

The engine, a 6262 cc V12, develops a power of 660 HP (105 HP/litre) and a 683 Nm torque at 6’000 rpm. It is characterized by a lubrication system based on a dry crankcase, with an extraction and exhaust phase variable timing and a direct injection feeding system driven by Split Injection Strategy. The engine is intended to meet future ethanol regulations.
The Bosh direct injection, driven by the Split Injection System, allows high performances already at very low engine speeds and a compression ratio of 12.3/1. As a matter of facts, at 1’000 reefs the FF V12 is already capable to provide a 501 Nm torque and at only 1’750 reefs delivers 80% of its maximum torque.
The newly designed 6 to 1 exhaust collection system, already in use on the 599 GTO, all of the same length, provides a better combustion and a more definite sound.
The reduced consumption is due to a refined technology in the engine development representing fine improvements such as DLC coated tappet, tribo-finishing camshaft, graphite head pistons and PVD coated for piston-ring, providing a lower attrition in the alternated movement of the pistons and an increased performance.
The FF Ferrari is the first 12 cylinders with a double clutch F1 gearbox. This gearbox is an evolution of the 458 ITALIA and CALIFORNIA model. The change occurs through the overlap of the opening and closing phase of the two clutches, providing gearbox changes in practically no time.
The 4WD is the main innovation of this Ferrari model. It is completely different from any other integrated drive system by its design and operation. The front-wheel-drive is engaged only when needed, guaranteeing the traditional Ferrari’s sporty rear-wheel-drive.
This is the actual 4WD setup:
2 - transaxle rear gearbox connected to the engine through the transmission shaft
3 - front-wheel movement transmitted the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) connected directly to the engine transmission shaft in relation to the front ax
The PTU is the main transmission unit of the 4WD, capturing the movement directly from the engine transmission shaft and transferring it to the front wheels through a gearing system and a carbon double clutch in an oil bath under continuous skid. Therefore, there is no connection between the rear and the front wheels.
The PTU works up to the forth gear of the F1 gearbox which corresponds to a speed of 200 km/h. This transmission, because of its characteristics, is quite compact and the whole system, including the front axle shaft, the lubrication system and the cooling system weighs only 45 kg against the 100 kg of a traditional system. This has allowed an optimum weight ratio between the front and the back, representing, respectively, 47% and 53%.
Tuning Remapping for Ferrari FF by TAG Electronic
TAG Electronic provides magnificent GT owners with three mapping levels which improve the V12 engine performance of the car.
The first mapping of the Ferrari FF optimizes the direct injection yield guaranteeing a performance increase already at low speeds and providing about an additional 37 HP of maximum power
The second mapping scheme for the Ferrari FF guarantees a maximum engine revolution higher by 250 rpm.
The third mapping option for the Ferrari FF has been developed for the installation of a sporty exhaust system, with racing catalytic converters, which provides a power increase of about 48 HP.
Each TAG Electronic mapping developed for the Ferrari FF is characterized by linearity of the torque expression giving more dynamics and pleasure to the driving of the car, and notably increasing the purely sporty and exuberant character of this powerful GT. All mapping options provide a consumption reduction of 10-15%.
